On April 7, 1995, 17 soldiers of the military unit 5485 in Shymkent were heroically killed in a bloody battle with the Afghan Mujahideen on the Tajik-Afghan border of the CIS while performing an international peacekeeping mission in the Pshikhvar gorge. Currently, April 7 is the Day of Courage in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On April 7, 2021, in the Abai Park in the city of Shymkent, in front of the obelisk erected in honor of the fallen 17 soldiers, the Union of Combat Veterans together with the military personnel of the military unit 5485 organized a Memorial Day for the victims. The event was attended by military veterans, as well as students of the military department of the South Kazakhstan State Pedagogical University, who laid flowers at the monument. A great contribution to the education of patriotism of the younger generation is made by the veterans of military operations, the deputy head of the military department-the head of the training unit, Lieutenant Colonel of the reserve Asan Bulegenovich Kasymbekov and the teacher of the military department, major of the reserve Aikynbekov Bakhtiyar Aitpaevich.
